Help & Support

Welcome to the GlyphSmith help center. Here you'll find guides to get you started and answers to common questions.

Basic Workflow

1. Importing Glyphs

You can drag and drop SVG files directly into the left sidebar. GlyphSmith will automatically try to detect the character from the filename (e.g., "A.svg" becomes "A"). You can also use the Import button or press ⌘I.

Unicode Hex Patterns

You can also use Unicode hex codes in filenames:

  • u+0041.svg → A
  • uni0041.svg → A

2. Adjusting Metrics

Select a glyph from the sidebar to open it in the editor. Use the guidelines to adjust the positioning. The metrics panel allows you to fine-tune the advance width and side bearings for each glyph.

3. Kerning

Switch to the Kerning view to adjust the spacing between specific pairs of characters. You can drag the characters to adjust their spacing visually, or type in values for precision.

4. Exporting Your Font

Once you're happy with your glyphs, click the "Export" button in the toolbar or press ⌘E. You can choose to export as OTF, TTF, WOFF, or WOFF2.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SVG features are supported?

GlyphSmith supports standard SVG paths. Complex features like gradients, masks, or embedded images are ignored as they cannot be represented in a standard font file. We recommend converting all strokes to paths before importing.

Can I edit the vector paths inside GlyphSmith?

Currently, GlyphSmith is designed for assembling and spacing fonts. You should create and edit your vector shapes in a dedicated vector editor like Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, or Inkscape, and then import them into GlyphSmith.

What are the limitations of the trial version?

The free trial allows you to use all features of the app but is limited to projects with up to 10 glyphs. To create larger fonts, you'll need to purchase a license.
